 | My name is Alicia Mitchell. This website is the result of my experiences and ever questioning mind working as a conventional groom. I mucked out, rugged, plaited and rode racehorses, worked with hunters, event horses and many others types of horse both here in the UK and abroad. This was both a trying time and an educalional one too. When ever I found a task unnessesary, unfair to the horse or just confusing or frustrating for what ever reason I'd take notes. |
Probably not the best employee I questioned everything. How would I do it differently? Was there a better way? Who benefited from these tasks and how did they effect the well being of the horse? These enquiries lead me on a path of discovery.
I began to build a body of evidence that contradicted many of the jobs I had to do as a groom. Eventually this made working as a groom a difficult experience. Not only because I failed to see why certain jobs had to be done but also because I could see that at times the horses suffered.
During this time I was developing my interest in the natural horse and had been lucky enough to actually meet wild horses whilst in California - USA.
The self maintiang horse is a true marvel of nature ! Upon meeting the wild ones I saw for the first time how horses are supposed to live, how they have always lived and how we as humans should strive to allow them to live, to ensure their best chances for optimum health.
This website is a collection of those notes, it is my first website published in 2005.
